Kimbo Slice vs Ken Shamrock

Kimbo SliceKen Shamrock at IFL 2007

EliteXC has just announced that on Oct. 4, Kimbo Slice will be fighting Ken Shamrock live on CBS. Ken "The World's Most Dangerous Man" Shamrock has not been living up to his nickname of late. He has lost his last five fights by either KO or TKO in the first round. I wonder why EliteXC picked him to fight Kimbo instead of Brett Rogers who has a 6-0 MMA record. It is rumored that the winner of this fight will fight Brett next.

Unlike Kimbo Slice though, Ken Shamrock has been fighting talented MMA fighters like Rich Franklin, Tito Ortiz, and Kazushi Sakuraba. EliteXC has to be hoping that Kimbo can knock Shamrock out before he gets taken down, so they can set up the Kimbo vs Brett Rogers fight. In Kimbo's last fight, he was taken down easily several times. If Ken Shamrock can get Kimbo to the ground, the fight will be over very quickly. It is easy to think that Kimbo Slice will knock Ken Shamrock out, but we have all seen the beatings that Shamrock can take. Tito beat him so bad that he had lumps on his lumps. If the refs are not stopping the fights as ridiculously early as they were in the first EliteXC event, I think Ken Shamrock has a good shot at actually winning this fight.

Nothing against Kimbo, but the hype machine that surrounds him bothers me. I have never been a "The World's Most Dangerous Man" fan, but I will be pulling for Ken in this fight. It will be interesting to see if Kimbo does lose, will EliteXC still promote him like currently do, or will they think most of his marketability went away with the defeat. Let's hope they stick with their guy at a scaled back level. I would actually like to see what Kimbo could do with another year or two of training under Bas Rutten.
