UFC 86 Jackson Vs. Griffin

July 5, 2008 at Mandalay Bay Events Center, Nevada

The Main Event is for the Light Heavyweight Championship, but there are not any other must see fights. I am still not sure I want to pay for this, or just read about it.

Quinton Jackson (27-6) Vs. Forrest Griffin (15-4)
MMAtalker Thoughts: This should be a very good fight if Griffin doesn't get knocked out early, which could happen since Griffin in known for his slow starts. I would like to see it go to the later rounds, and see what Jackson can do against someone with a motor like Griffin.

MMAtalker Prediction: Griffin wins by submission Rd. 4....Forrest wins by decision .

Fight re-cap round by round:

Round 1:

We almost got the prediction right one this one. Forrest came out looking sharp, throwing combinations and leg kicks and then moving out of Rampage's range. Then Rampage caught Forrest with a big uppercut that knocked him down. Rampage did a little ground and pound and Forrest made it back to his feet with about 25 seconds left in the round. I gave the first round to Rampage.

Round 2:

Forrest hits Rampage with two big leg kicks early that actually knocks him down and gets into half guard. Forrest moved his way to side control and eventually full mount. Rampage did a really good job of not taking much damage. I gave the second round to Forrest.

Round 3:

The pace for round 3 was much slower than the first two. Forrest was telegraphing the leg kick and Rampage was moving out of the way. They both traded a few big shots and Forrest had a nice flurry at the end of the round to steal it. I gave the third round to Forrest.

Round 4:

This was an exciting round. Rampage took Forrest down and cut him with some ground and pound, then Forrest caught Rampage in a triangle choke. The choke was deep and Rampage went for the power bomb slam, but Forrest was smart enough to let go, unlike the fighter we all see in the highlights. Forrest eventually got back to his feet and the round ended. I gave the fourth round to Forrest.

Round 5:

Rampage and Forrest traded combinations throughout this round. Rampage was trying for the knockout, but it didn't happen. I gave round five to Rampage.

Forrest wins and is the new UFC Light Heavyweight Champion. This was a very entertaining fight. Rampage showed a lot of heart with the bad leg, and Forrest actually fought a smart fight and won the decision.

Patrick Cote (13-4) Vs. Ricardo Almeida (9-2)
MMAtalker Thoughts: Cote has been on a nice run lately, so it is hard to bet against him.

MMAtalker Prediction: Cote wins by KO Rd. 1....Cote won by split decision.

Fight re-cap round by round:

Round 1:

Almeida takes down Cote early and often in this round. Cote did a good job of dodging the submissions and getting back to his feet. Almeida did some nice ground and pound at the end of the round. I gave round one to Almeida.

Round 2:

Almeida looked a little tired to me. He could not get the take down on Cote in this round. Cote was being very cautious to prevent the take down, so this was a boring round. I gave round 2 to Cote.

Round 3:

Cote used the leg kick more in this round and Almeida was really looking gassed. Another boring round. Almeida got a take down near the end of the round. This round could have gone either way.

This was the bad part of the Striker vs Grappler match. It seems when these two styles go against each other, it is either a really exciting fight or really boring fight. To bad for us this one was a boring fight. Cote wins by split decision.

Joe Stevenson (33-8) Vs. Gleison Tibau (27-4)
MMAtalker Thoughts: Stevenson starts his climb back up the ladder after his lose to B.J. Penn. I wish he had cut in that fight, it think it really changed Joe's approach to the fight. So I am going Stevenson.

MMAtalker Prediction: Stevenson wins by TKO Rd. 2....Stevenson wins by submission in Rd. 2.

Fight re-cap round by round:

Round 1:

The first thing I noticed is that Tibau is a huge fighter at 170 pounds. He is noticeably larger that Stevenson. The first action started when Stevenson knocks down Tibau with a big punch. Stevenson jumps on top and goes for a guillotine chock. There is a scramble and the both get back to their feet. For the last two minutes of this round, Tibau had Stevenson in a should lock and they just fought each other for better position. I gave round one to Tibau.

Round 2:

This round starts bad for Stevenson. Tibau got an early take down and moved to side control, and then full mount very quickly. While in full mount Tibau went for a submission and Stevenson was able to escape and get back to his feet. Tibau goes for another take down, and Stevenson catches him in a guillotine and submits him.

This was a good fight. Joe Stevenson was definitely losing the fight up until the time he submitted Tibau.

Josh Koscheck (13-2) Vs. Chris Lytle (35-15-4)
MMAtalker Thoughts: I really hope that Lytle knocks Koscheck out with a high light reel punch, but I have a feeling that Koscheck will probably win by decision after riding Lytle around for 3 rounds, he is almost as
boring to watch as Lyoto Machida.

MMAtalker Prediction: Koscheck wins by decision....Koscheck wins by decision.

Fight re-cap round by round:

Round 1:

Round 1 starts with some nice back and forth stand up, then Koscheck got the take down and rode Lytle for the rest of the round, landing a few nice punches on the ground. I gave round one to Koscheck.

Round 2:

Koscheck got the take down early and did some really nice ground and pound for the whole round. He cut Lytle really really bad with some nasty elbows. To my surprise, Koscheck was not boring at all. I gave round two to Koscheck.

Round 3:

The fighters traded some stand up, and Lytle almost caught Koscheck in a guillotine. Koscheck got out of it and did some more ground and pound. I gave round three to Koscheck.

This was the bloodiest fight I have seen in a while. Koscheck cut Lytle in 3 or 4 different places. This was by far the most entertaining KKoscheck fight I have seen. He almost made me a fan, but not quite. Koscheckwins by decision.

Tyson Griffin (11-1) Vs. Marcus Aurelio (14-5)
MMAtalker Thoughts: I am picking Griffin. He has too much motor and skill.

MMAtalker Prediction: Griffin wins by decision....Griffin wins by decision.

Fight re-cap round by round:

Round 1:

Griffin got a take down and started some ground and pound. Aurelio was looking for submissions, but also took some damage. The fighters got back to their feet and Griffin landed some leg kicks and defended a few take down attempts. I gave round one to Griffin.

Round 2:

After a take down and scramble, Aurelio ended up with Griffins back. Griffin rolled into and ended up into in Aurelio's guard and a triangle attempt. I gave round two to Aurelio.

Round 3:

Griffin was stuffing take downs while Aurelio was looking tired. Tyson got a take down and did some ground and pound . I gave round three to Griffin.

I am a Tyson Griffin fan, but he needs to learn to finish fights. This was his fifth win in a row by decision.

Gabriel Gonzaga (8-3) Vs. Justin McCully (8-3-2)
MMAtalker Thoughts: I am picking Gonzaga, but it will be interesting to see what kind of game McCully has.

MMAtalker Prediction: Gonzaga wins by TKO Rd. 2

Not televised.

Jorge Gurgel (16-3) Vs. Cole Miller (13-3)
MMAtalker Thoughts: I have to go with Miller. I think his stand up is just to good for Jorge to overcome.

MMAtalker Prediction: Miller wins by KO Rd. 1....Miller won by submission.

Not televised, but Cole Miller got the submission of the night with a triangle choke.

Melvin Guillard (39-8-3) Vs. Dennis Siver (11-5)
MMAtalker Thoughts: Like all of Guillard's fights, Siver will either lose by knock out, or win by submission.

MMAtalker Prediction: Guillard wins by KO Rd. 2......Guillard wins by KO Rd.1

Not Televised, but Guillard got the Knockout of the night with a KO in round one.

Corey Hill (2-0) Vs. Justin Buchholz (8-2)
MMAtalker Thoughts: I have been a Hill fan since he was on TUF.

MMAtalker Prediction: Hill wins by TKO Rd. 1

Not Televised.
